Last Monday, one of my labmates suffered severe injuries from an explosion in our lab. He was doing a distillation and he let all of the solvent boil off, when he attempted to clean it. It detonated in his face sending glass shrapnel through his arm. Destroying everything in his fume hood, and cracking a inch thick composite blast shield almost in half.
My other lab mate told me they found a trail of blood from his fumehood to the bathroom across the hall.
Luckily they took him to the hospital and he’s fine now, but jesus fucking christ. They had to have Environmental Health and Safety come and clean everything up.. including all of his blood.
